Why does my vw gearbox crunch into first gear?

I have a golf gti 16v mk3, and im having trouble with selecting first gear sometimes goes in ok but most of the times it crunches into gear. Any clues folks?????All other gears are fine???

If i need to replace gearbox oil any advice in regard to doing this would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Why does my vw gearbox crunch into first gear? You can try changing the gearbox oil, but usually your problem isn't fixed by that. That is more for if you are having problems between the other gears (2nd to 3rd, ect.) If you are standing still, push the clutch in and it grinds, then it sounds like there is a problem with the clutch. If, for example, you reverse and come to a complete stop but shift into first too quickly, it can cause a grinding noise like you are describing. It can't hurt to change the oil (I recommend using Redline brand gearbox oil MTL) if it's never been done, just to see if that does help before you go looking into other things. There are 2 plugs, one drain on the bottom, one fill on the side toward the front of the car.Why does my vw gearbox crunch into first gear?
Are you moving at the time it "crunches"? i.e Are you coming to a stop in second gear, and trying to put it in first?

Cos if you are, you shouldn't be doing that, the car should come to a stop in second with clutch engaged. Wait until the car is fully stopped and engage first gear, and if you need power whilst still moving, second gear will suffice.

My missus constantly crunches in to first gear, and it p*sses me off because it's my car and my gearbox she's wrecking. Why does my vw gearbox crunch into first gear?have you checked the gearbox oil

has it ben changed and the correct oil put in it

should be 75w/90 synthetic

many miles has it done

may be worn syncro between 1st and 2nd as when your trying to select first it will be selecting second

if the car cruches when your stationary when selecting reverse will be clutch

if not check the self adjuster on the CABLE as if the clutch best to renew this and get one from the dealer
There are no synchronizers for first and reverse in most manual transmissions. If you aren't experiencing grinding in reverse, then you may be S.O.O.L. However, the clutch may not be fully disengaging and that normally means you either have air in the lines leading to the slave cylinder or the slave is failing. Not something a novice should tackle, at least without prior knowledge. Seek a pro. Ask to watch and learn. And pay attention. Could also be a worn clutch or throwout bearing but everything is just a guess without looking at the car first hand. Good luck. Why does my vw gearbox crunch into first gear?It does not sound like a gearbox oil problem (unless the box is low on oil),

it sounds more like a clutch that is not adjusted correctly, i.e. when putting your foot on the clutch to change gear, the clutch plate is not being released. You should be able to resolve this problem by adjusting clutch. Why does my vw gearbox crunch into first gear?
Clutch cable adjustment is what I would try first because the clutch is not seperating completely. If cannot fix it that way(if it is a cable clutch it is adjustable-if it is hydraulic there is no adjustment), then the clutch disk is worn too thin. Get it replaced. Do it soon otherwise you will ruin the first gear syncro and then the tranny "has" to come apart. Replacing the clutch is much cheaper/simpler/ and faster than disassembly of a transmission(it has to go to a shop)

And for those who do not know, shifting into first gear while rolling forward can be done since about 1967. The older transmissions - no way jose' "come to a dead stop: no ifs or buts". So long as the car is moving it can stay in second gear. "Unless you are on bush roads where you almost don't move forward at times." But after stalling it a few times you will figure it out.

No car is syncronized for reverse gear. If you are rolling backwards it will not slip into any forward gear...if rolling forwards going into reverse is a grinder as well.
Gear oil won't fix that.Your clutch is not releasing the pressure on the flywheel.

Bleed the clutch. Why does my vw gearbox crunch into first gear?
sounds like a worn clutch, but imposable to diagnose from here.
your car is broke... do you understand that?
