Why does my 1983 gti vw die when the gas gets down to 1/4 of a tank?

My car dies everytime the gas gets down to the 1.4 of a tank. I was wondering why this would be could it be the fuel pump? Why does my 1983 gti vw die when the gas gets down to 1/4 of a tank?Maybe an indicated 1/4 is REALLY empty and the gage is incorrect. Not all gas gages are correct. Why does my 1983 gti vw die when the gas gets down to 1/4 of a tank?1983 metal tank with welded baffles inside. Baffles break with age and fuel runs away every time you go round a corner. The tanks were famous for doing this in endurance racing and many were replaced by fuel cells. A good mechanic can ge this fixed but it won't be cheap removing the tank and welding inside it(dangerous to the unskilled)
