How can I remove the rear axle nuts to remove the drum brakes on a 1973 VW beetle?

I tried using a breaker bar it bent, I dont have air tools and I cant exert any more pressure on the nut physically then i already amHow can I remove the rear axle nuts to remove the drum brakes on a 1973 VW beetle? The Haynes manual states "Removal of the rear brake drums is a considerable task...". Here I have to agree with them. The first time I tried, I bent the pipe that I had over the 1/2" socket strong bar. Walked away from the job and left it for a few days before I tried it again using my 1/2" strong bar and a 4ft piece of galvanised pipe. Had to jam wedges under the back wheels because the handbrake would not hold and the wheel started to spin.

I now use a 36mm 3/4" drive socket with a long piece of steam pipe (which fits nicely over the 3/4" socket strong bar) to provide extra leverage. The problem arises that the nut is tightened to a torque of 217 lb/ft (30mkg) which is quite considerable.

Heating will not work and will only cause damage.

Once you have managed to loosen it and completed what you were doing, it needs to be tightened again to that same torque otherwise it works loose, damaging the splines on the brake drum.

Good luck on what I can only refer to as one of the more 'crappy' motor repair tasks. How can I remove the rear axle nuts to remove the drum brakes on a 1973 VW beetle?Get some good penetrating oil. something like PB Blaster or similar. You could try WD-40 but I wouldnt recommend it. Soak down the bolt's as mush as you can and let sit for a while. After a few hours resoak them. Maybe let them sit overnight at this point if you can and then try taking them off again. You coudl also get a torch and heat everything around the bolt and then do it from there. The heat makes the metal expand which will make the bolts easier to come out.How can I remove the rear axle nuts to remove the drum brakes on a 1973 VW beetle? If the car is still driveable take it to a small tire store not a big chain store. Maybe they will break it lose for you and then retighten, but not all the way. Limp it home gently fix what needs to be fixed and go back to have it tightened properly.

Will any VW key i order be able to be added to my VW Golf 4 Tdi?

I need a spare key for my car and i have found a site that can import me a key and its about 80% cheaper than going directly to the dealer! I just want to know is there a specific flick key i must order or will any key i order be able to be added to the car? I have the software already to add it!Will any VW key i order be able to be added to my VW Golf 4 Tdi?Just take it to the dealer to have them code it.

By the way, lowering your mileage is illegal almost everywhere in the world - it's called fraud. Will any VW key i order be able to be added to my VW Golf 4 Tdi?Your software's manual should have the answer. And generally, NO you need to order the key made for that make, model and year. Other than that, you should be good. Seems weird that you would have software that costs thousands of dollars to program one key. Also strange that you don't seem to have the manual to go with the software. Hmmmmmmm.......

2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?

It starts sometimes and always when you jump it. Have cleaned posts and autozone says battery health is fine.2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas? It may be the ignition switch. I've replaced a few. The extra voltage/amp's when you jump it overcomes the poor connection in the switch. Try pushing/wiggling switch next time and see if it starts.2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?
might have a bad ground. check the battery cables to make sure everything is clean and tight.

when you turn the key, does the car turn over weak? does it make a series of fast and loud clicks? does it do anything? it might be worth it to buy a new (if you havent already) battery...i would suggest buying an Interstate, they are the best battery for the money hands down.

it may also be a bad solenoid on the starter motor. also, as someone else has said, it may be the ignition switch.

need more information to be able to make a better guess at it.2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?Check the terminal connections are tight. And the earth. Maybe check connections on the starter!!!2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?
i dont know if the bug is anything like the GTI but if your car comes with the stock amplifier in the trunk it could be something with that, my car was having the same problem and i tried everything to fix it (new battery, alternator, etc.), after like 6 months we finally figured out the stock amp was not turning off with the car and was draining the battery, just put your ear up to the speaker and if u hear something coming out when your car is off you found your problem!2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?Your fault is clearly an electrical power problem! Are you 100% sure battery is ok? If so check for voltage drop on the starter ( could be partially seized), or could be starter cable has high resistance due to burns.

Look for loose contact or rust on the main battery ground wire connection to body, could also cause voltage drop.Clean all main positive and ground contacts, refit and tight to correct torque.

Finally, check the output of the alternator at cold and warm running (should not be less than 13V). Battery may be ok, but lower output alternator could cause low battery charge.I hope this helps.
