What year did VW buses have auto-transmissions available?

Im looking for the year specifically I know its in the late 70's but I cant figure out which year, also, if you know of any place in the continental US that sells these bad boys let me know thanx!!What year did VW buses have auto-transmissions available? The first year was 1974, for Continental (USA bound) buses.

The best place to look for an automatic bus is the Samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/

Keep in mind a lot of the ads will say that the automatic transmission was RARE, but thats just not the case. Production figures for manuals and automatics are about 50/50. The manual transmission LASTED longer in the bus, so thats why you dont see many of the automatics left. I highly reccomend getting a manual transmission, even if it means that you have to learn to drive a stick. Better performance, better gas mileage, and less costly to repair. What year did VW buses have auto-transmissions available?I'm pretty sure that once the Type 4 engine was introduced into the Bay Window Bus(circa 1972), a few years later the automatic tranny started showing up. I believe the Vanagon models had the option of an Automatic thought their run from 1980 to 1991. The Eurovans also had automatics, but all three generations of buses did not perform well with the auto tranny. Unless you are missing your left foot or leg, I'd stay with the manual tranny. It gets better gas mileage too.
