I was recently wondering how much the price range be if you imported a passat from Europe to the US?How much does it cost to import a VW passat r36 from europe to the US?If it isn't offered in the US, you don't want to try and import it, the time and expense make it impossible to legally register the car in the USA. The paperwork process is long and time consuming, the car will be impounded at the port of entry (and stored at your expense) while you arrange the process to have it certified to meet US DOT %26amp; EPA standards. If the car is an older model, in the 1980's or earlier, then the process is much easier. Cars built before the introduction of emissions standards and safety standards for the 1968 model year can be imported fairly easily, but there is still a long paperwork process to be done.
If the car is some super expensive Porsche, MB, BMW, or some italian sports super machine, then the process might be worth it. But it won't come cheap. Getting the car here is the easy part; I once knew someone who imported a 1989 model vehicle from Europe (those are much easier to import) and the process was both expensive and time consuming. I gave him some assistance in filling out the paperwork that I could easily understand. Your customs broker probably can only provide assistance with the import documents, but I doubt they will be much help with finding a grey market certification firm to allow the vehicle to be registred and licensed in the USA.
I can tell you that the vehicle will need to meet US standards for the EPA %26amp; DOT (dept of transportation) and that since you and I lack ability to certify a vehicle to these standards, you will have to use a grey market independent certification company. I suspect based upon my past experience with the process that you can easily spend more than the cost of the car to get it certified to meet these requirements. I don't think VW will be interested in providing you with the needed engineering assistance to help the process along, since they don't sell the vehicle in the US, they won't be able to give you pat answers to questions that will come up during the certification process.
I hope this helps, a car nut.

Plus if you were to upgrade your passat and try to make it an R36 it would be kind of like converting a regular integra into a type r. Too much work for your time and probably won't get finished.
Buy a car and import it because those are the 2 things you have to worry about, as opposed to the other route where you worry about 300 things you need to swap (wheels, breaks, suspension, engine, harness, etc, etc, etc, etc.)How much does it cost to import a VW passat r36 from europe to the US?It would probably cost less to find a wrecked touareg, get the 3.6 out of it, and swap it in compared to the cost of having it imported, filing the paperwork, having tests run, and registering it. I agree though, it's an awesome car.How much does it cost to import a VW passat r36 from europe to the US?
My cousin brought a car back from Germany at a cost of $2100.
