Why does my 2001 vw gti vr6 rattle only when I accelerate?

Rattling occurs it seems from the bottom of the car and goes away once I'm in 3rd gear. Could it be the exhaust?Why does my 2001 vw gti vr6 rattle only when I accelerate?I would have your mechanic look at the undercarriage and see if something's broken or loose.
