Is it safe to take my convertible VW Bug through a car wash?

They have soft cloth on rollers that go over the top of the car, and my husband thinks that the chemicals will hurt the soft top. He thinks we should go the kind where you use the wand and brush manually to clean it.Is it safe to take my convertible VW Bug through a car wash?It will be safe...........if you put the top up.
