I would like to know what I could put on my vw bus so it can go just a bit faster.?. I don't want it to be like a hot rod or anything I just want it to go highway speeds or just a little faster than it.What could i add to my vw bus to make it go faster?? Just to like at least 70mph or 80mph?Rebuild the engine using 88mm pistons, dual carbs. and a good header exhaust. The carburetors don't have to be real expensive ones, I suggest a pair of Delortos. Assuming you already have a stock 1600cc motor, this will build it up to an 1835cc motor. Anything bigger would require machine work and allot more money. What could i add to my vw bus to make it go faster?? Just to like at least 70mph or 80mph?
You did not tell us anything about the year or engine, so no one can give really good advice.
I would agree however that all cars can get more hp with less exhaust obstruction and a more balanced and tuned flow. Catalytic converters should always be removed and replaced with straight pipes that can be switched back for DEQ testing, not only because they hurt power and mileage, but because they produce all sorts of horrible toxins like cyanates, formalins, and sulfites.
If it has fuel injection, I would not replace the fuel injection with a carb however, but instead would do things like adjust the fuel pressure regulator in order to allow the engine to get more gas. You can also add a variable potentiometer to all the sensors, like O2, temp, etc., in order to tweak them.
Timing needs to be advanced as much as possible, but we can't advise if you should get a different distributor or a new chip because we don't know what year you have. And then you will have to use premium gas.
Breathing is important, and some of the cold air intakes are supposed to help. Some sort of air scoops always help ram air into the intake and increase power.
Changing the camshaft is a fairly inexpensive way to greatly increase HP on the water cooled engines. But longer valve duration and overlap will shorten valve life because they don't touch as long and conduct heat away. Too much effort on the air cooled.
If you are serious about getting more out of the engine, the first thing to do is to add more instrumentation, such as gauges to show what the fuel pressure, intake manifold pressure, O2 sensor, temp sensor, air sensor, etc., are reading. Only when you have this dynamic data, can you tell if a fuel pump, sensor, etc., might be holding the engine back. What could i add to my vw bus to make it go faster?? Just to like at least 70mph or 80mph?put bigger tires on the rear. this will in a sense re-gear the transmission. or you can buy a gene berg 5 speed transmission. you dont really need more power to get a higher top speed. buy larger tires for the back and you will be able to go faster. it will be harder to start in 1st gear though, i mean you will have to ride the clutch longer and rev the motor higher. in turn you will burn the clutch out slightly faster than normal, but considering that a clutch kit costs about $120 - $150 and you can do it yourself in about 2 hours its worth it and its the cheapest way to increase your top speed
your thinking of making your vw bus quicker, but your NOT thinking about the brakes,
it might be a good idea to blast down the highway at 80 mph but what happens if you need to stop quick,, the standard brakes in the van wont be able to cope with the extra braking it needs to do due to the van was only built to do 50-60 mph and so was the brakes
big bore exhaust and a hi-performance air filter should give you about 7-10 bhp extra, and a twin carb another 10-20 bhp,What could i add to my vw bus to make it go faster?? Just to like at least 70mph or 80mph?there's a lot of ways to go. You can but higher compression heads on it (make sure you get the proper pistons and rods for that) You can but a big bore cylinder kit on it, you can turbo or supercharge it (but the engine most likely will not enjoy that- expect life to drastically decrease) Another popular option is swapping a later vw engine (like a type 4) into it, or subaru.
To th3donkwhatever; you can't chip a car with carbs, dumbshit. What could i add to my vw bus to make it go faster?? Just to like at least 70mph or 80mph?
Yeah definately a exhaust and carb setup would help the most, but the simple things that help would be to make it a slippery as possible, waxing it up, taking off any roof racks, making a brick go down the road is always interesting! I put a 1.8 out of a mid 80s jetta in mine with a Kennedy adapter, it would go 80 easily!
Are you sure you want it to go faster? I had a 72 Bus, and it was a handful at speed, especially with a crosswind. As someone else said, improve the brakes if you do make other mods, and maybe the suspension. And don't hit a deer...What could i add to my vw bus to make it go faster?? A carb and manifold upgrade will help with the performance without tearing into the engine.

Goodluck
Put a rocket in the back of it. Lol. I don't think you can make one go over 60 and heaven fprbid you have to take it up a hill.
Supercharge, turbo, performance chip, or upgrade headers. Also small things can make a difference such as, upgraded exhaust system, k %26amp; n air filter, or cold air intake.
Find a Porsche 912 engine for it.Sell the old engine as a boat anchor.
