How much should it cost to get a new timing belt put on a 2000 Vw bug?

We drove it out of town. It broke down. A local guy there told us it would cost around 300 dollars labor just to confirm the problem and then another 1500 - 2500 to fix.How much should it cost to get a new timing belt put on a 2000 Vw bug?I was at my local VW specialist, and I listened to him quote a price of 800 including parts, for the same job and it is an all day affair. That's a guy doing it who knows exactly what he's doing, time wise.

So it pays to shop around, but stick to a Euro specialist, or VW only place.

That's for the water pump as well. It's labor intensive, and difficult to get at.

If it broke already, you're out a cylinder head as well. How much should it cost to get a new timing belt put on a 2000 Vw bug?don't know if you want the belt replaced or if the belt broke, in a dealer (ireland) 520euro. if the belt broke then the intake or exhaust valves are bent, this means the head will have to be replaced also the cam could be damaged. this means replacing the head + head gasket + manifold gasket+ exhaust gasket+ coolant+timing belt and tension-er. if this has too be done replace the water pump which is operated by the timing belt because the water pumps in vw always give out. trust me i know.

if its just the belt u want replaced How much should it cost to get a new timing belt put on a 2000 Vw bug?change belt every 60,000 miles...............wholesale cost is 60.00.............install should be no more then 160.00, dealer 300.00 yes
