I have a 1973 Volkswagen Standard Beetle. I can't remember for my life. It's pissing me off too since I know the engine so well I can assemble one in my sleep. When I buy a part, I just buy it for a 1973 46hp. I am almost sure it is 1600, am I right? What is the displacement of my VW aircooled engine?"...I am almost sure it is 1600, am I right?" --YES you are.
Your engine number probably lies between
AF 0,000,802 - AF 0,036,768
delivers 46bhp(DIN)
and is a 1600cc
Edit
If the vehicle contains the standard egine with which it was fitted then for 1973 model period 1 Aug 72 to 31 July 73.
Then it must be the 1600 AF motor which was fitted in 1972 - 73. This motor was not fitted standard after July 73
Chassis 113,2000,001 - 113,3200,000
VW1303 133,2000,001 - 133,3200,000 (superbug)
Engine D 1,000,001 - D 1,115,873 - 34bhp(DIN) 1200
Engine AC 0,006,701 - AC 0,008,195 - 40bhp(DIN)1300
Engine AB 0,699,002 - AB 0,990,000 - 44bhp(DIN)1300
Engine AF 0,000,802 - AF 0,036,768 - 46bhp(DIN)1600
Engine AE 0,917,264 - AE 1,000,000 (to 1 Oct 72) - 47bhpDIN 60bhpSAE 1600(USA)
Engine AK 0,000,001 - AK 0,239,364 (from 1 Oct 72) - 0bhpDIN 65bhpSAE 1600
Engine AH 0,005,901 - AH 0,114,418- 47 bhp(DIN)1600(USA)
With the following improvements/changes
Reduced horsepower in US models (60 to 58 SAE).
600 watt (50 amp) alternator replaces generator in mid year.
Improved intake pre-heating for faster cold weather warm-up.
Engine case near No3/flywheel is reinforced to prevent cracking.
Softer transmission mounting.
Softer clutch.
Porsche style pressure plate.
No oil drain plug in oil strainer cover plate.
New fuel pump (with cut-off valve) to clear alternator.
Paper air filter.
New 鈥榣ifetime lubricated' front and rear wheel bearings.
Larger curved windscreen and smaller front lid to luggage compartment.
New dash in super beetle.
Redesigned fresh air system.
New interior light assembly.
Stronger bumpers.
Large round (Elephant Foot) tail lights.
鈥楽ports Bug' option.
New front seats with multiple adjustment.
Outer door handles get 鈥榯wo finger' indents on trigger.
.What is the displacement of my VW aircooled engine?
1600cc.What is the displacement of my VW aircooled engine? It might be. Or a 1500. Or a 1300. As all these engines fit into the car. You really won't know for sure until you pop off a head and measure the diameter of a pot.
I will toss you some numbers on cylinder bores
3.031in. = 1300
3.27 in. = 1500
3.36 in. = 1600
3.36 in. = 1600 Super
Advice: do these measurements "awake"
The stroke is the same on all.
The only difference between a std and a Super is that the Super has dual port heads. so the intake manifold splits into 2 passageways which is easily seen in the engine compartment as you look toward the spark plug area.
Here are some other numbers for more accuracy(just for you)
1300: HP 50-4600 RPM
1500: HP 53-4200 RPM
1600: HP 57-4700 RPM(1970)
1600: HP 60-4400 RPM(Super) carbed.
Now you may not want to go and rip a head off.(I don't). Look at the numbers on the float bowl of the carb. Chances are if it was a complete motor swap the carb would have remained with the accompanying engine rather than swapped.
On the bowls in the casting
30PICT1 -1300
30PICT 2 - 1500
30PICT3 - 1600
34PICT3- 1600Super
But there is no guarantee there either.
And as you are walking in with the 46hp engine order on a 73 car, it is up to the parts guy to determine what to give you.
And 46 hp fits closer to the 1300cc line of engine.
You got the smallest engine that can be fitted into that car. A good motor yes, for dune buggies especially. I would opt for the 1600. So keep your eyes peeled(use a sharp knife) and your ears to the ground(sliced off by the sharp knife)for something "floating around". There should be scads of them. What is the displacement of my VW aircooled engine?
1600 is about right if it is the orig. engine. Except for the cylinders and pistons there is no practical difference in the engine when you buy routine parts.
.What is the displacement of my VW aircooled engine?Hi, If you have the original engine, it is 1600CC like you thought.
The HP doesn't sound right though. I am pretty sure it is more powerful than that! What is the displacement of my VW aircooled engine?
on the case, just under the genny stand, the engine number is stamped.
it will start with 2 letters - these letters denote which engine you have.
since all the air cooled range use the same basic case, any engine couldbe fitted from a 1200 beetle to a 2000cc T4!
Codes beginning - Engine size - Single or Twin port
D 1200cc S/P
F 1300cc S/P
AB 1300cc T/p
AR 1300cc T/P
H, L 1500cc S/P
B 1600cc S/P
AD, AE, AF, AH, AJ, AK, AS 1600cc T/P
also see the link below.
another way to find out is if the engine is stripped the use the formula bore x bore x stroke x 0.00314
