How can I make a classic VW Beetle safer?

Do they have ABS brakes, if not is there a way to add them? What else can I do to make it safer? How can I make a classic VW Beetle safer?bubble wrapHow can I make a classic VW Beetle safer?
New brakes would make the car a lot safer. What about airbags? Anti lock brakes? How can I make a classic VW Beetle safer? There are disc brake conversions you can add to the front end for a few hundred bucks. They have better stopping capability and are self adjusting. Rear discs are available, but the bang for the buck isn't there, IMO. ABS systems are quite complex and I've never heard of one for retrofit for any older car.

Make sure your seatbelts are in good condition and working properly. Make sure your floorpans aren't overly rusty where the seat staying put is not an issue. Make sure all your lighting is functioning properly, including brake lights. Good condition properly inflated tires are a must.

Bottom line is that there's no arguing these cars aren't at the same safety standards as new cars, but make them as sound as possible and don't drive stupid and you'll be fine. How can I make a classic VW Beetle safer?
Jay has given you a very good response, I'd only add a few items. Firstly, get the webbing on the seat belt replaced, several web sites on the net have companies that can replace the old webbing with new and restore the hardware. If your car has only seat belts, find a shoulderharness set up that was used by VW in the later models and install that (after replacing the webbing of course) and also install the later seats with the intergrated head rest that was used in 1970?/1971 bugs and later. You can add a blower fan to the older bugs to improve the heater/defroster, while this does not directly improve safety, it does indirectly by reducing the time it takes to clear the windshield and with additional heat flow, making you more comfortable.

Using newer headlight wiring assemblies with HID (high intensity discharge) bulbs will improve how far you can see at night and also shine a brighter light. Replacement of the generator with an alternator will mean that you can run additional accessories without worrying about draining the battery at idle speeds. How can I make a classic VW Beetle safer?roll barHow can I make a classic VW Beetle safer?
Roll Cage, Racing Seats and the six point harnesses. Having ABS brakes doesn't make the car safer, Have you ever thought what is the emergency procedure in the event of ABS system failure at the time it is most needed.
