Why do i get really bad gas mileage on my 4 cylinder vw golf?

It is a 2002 Golf and i just bought it. I though they were amaizing on gas, but not this one it will spend a whole gas tank in a week and i only drive it to school, school is like 5 minutes away. Our 8 cylinder jeep is more efficient on gas than this little 4 cylinder.

Like how bad of gas mileage? Knowing this would have helped a lot. Do you have an orange "check engine" light on on your instrument cluster? If you do, but the car still seems to run ok, then you probably have a bad O2 sensor. Especially if the car has over 100,000 miles on it. Also take a look at what comes out of your tailpipe; if there are any visible blackish emissions, or if you smell gas, this could also point to a bad O2 sensor. Almost any other faulty sensor on the car that triggers the "check engine" light will also cause driveability problems. But not a bad or failed O2 sensor, it will just really eat into your gas mileage, and eventually cause the failure of the vehicle's catalytic converter. tune up. oil change, spark plugs, wires, rotor and cap, air filter only K %26amp; N, pcv valve, check belts



new oxygen sensors mostlikely 4, use smaller tires



or maybe your gasoline pump is going

oil change, tune-up and change gas stations, they might have watered down gas.
Check your tire pressure. If your tires are low on air that could cause bad gas mileage.
it could be a bunch of different things, sludge in the engine, bad spark plugs, dirty air filter, even the kind of gasoline you are using, ect. ... i would have it checked out.
