Just wondering whether the 1.6 litre engines in the 70's vans are as good as the later 1.8's and 2.0 engines for long distance touring. Are the 1600's more efficient on fuel? Or is the 2.0 a better choice to keep up with traffic and reduce stress on the engine? I am looking for a camper to purchase and I am wondering whether to avoid the 1.6's. ThanksWhat is the best engine size for the VW Kombi classic campervan? They are all very good from the 1600 upright engine to the 1700,1800 and 2000cc models. All are geared differently so performance is very similar. The 2000cc is faster -over 120k but the 1800 is better in hilly country.
The 1600s and ven early 1200s have performed all over the world and there is many 1600 engined poptop campers cruising around Australia.
We are restoring a 73 poptop now and have removed the 1800 which had head problems and replacing with good twinport 1600-far more economical. What is the best engine size for the VW Kombi classic campervan?the 2.0 is the better choice for carring the load of a camper
