I have an 02 VW Jetta and my dealer has quoted me $360 to replace the coolant flange. Is this fair?

I have already put literally thousands of dollars into repairs and I really don'tt know anything about cars so I usually end up breaking down and replacing whatever they tell me to replace. Right now, I justdon'tt have a ton of money since I just got my 100,000 mile check up and brake flush for another $400 this month. Is this something I can learn to fix myself?I have an 02 VW Jetta and my dealer has quoted me $360 to replace the coolant flange. Is this fair? This is an average job, take it to an independant VW mechanic. You "really don't know anything about cars" , so start with very easy maintenance and then go from there. If you need your car, take it to a mechanic since if you DIY and don't know anything, it'll probably take 3 times as long to fix.I have an 02 VW Jetta and my dealer has quoted me $360 to replace the coolant flange. Rule #1 stay away from dealers. They will rip you for all you got. I would have no idea what a coolant flange is. Get out of there and don't go back. Ask around and see where others take their cars for repair and see if they are satisfied. A brake flush is another scam.I have an 02 VW Jetta and my dealer has quoted me $360 to replace the coolant flange. Is this fair?the part is probably around 50 bucks, the rest is likely labour. but it does sound a little pricey. think the first thing you should do is get rid of the vw, they are pieces of crap. my brother had one and ended up putting $6000 into it before it even had 100,000km on it. problems were-strut bearings, wheel bearing, ignition, other wiring, abs. no end to the problems, finally got sick of the money pit and sold it. sure the fit and finish is top notch but who gives a **** if you cant keep the damn thing running. not to mention the cost of the parts for the thing, at least triple of a domestic, it was $40 just for an oil filter. my brothers was an 02 jetta with a v6, I bought an 02 sebring the same day for my wife, it had a 200hp v6 and got 36 mpg, about 8 more than my brother ever got. sure the fit and finnish was not as nice on the sebring, but we got over 230,000kms on that car and other than regular oil changes the only other maintenance was a wheel bearing replaced under warranty. it probably would have gone for 500,000k but some ****** ran a stop sign and hit it, wrote it off.I have an 02 VW Jetta and my dealer has quoted me $360 to replace the coolant flange. Yup. If you can put thousands into repairs, you can afford a few bucks for metric tools(open end wrenches and sockets and a repair manual) Wrench sizes most commonly needed are 10,13,15,17,19/ a flat blade screwdriver and a phillips screwdriver. Get a decent manual (go check the library out first as they have all the different publishers and scan the books over to see which one is best for you to understand) borrow the book and with book in one hand and wrench in the other, work on your car.

I have no idea what a coolant "flange" is(or what they are referring to. Can you figure it out and go to the auto salvage yard and get the part and put it in yourself for the price of a burger(most likely). The work on your car does not have to be done at the dealers. They only charge 4x's the price of a garage.

Talk to other VW owners and they tend to know of VW specialty garages who do a good job for a decent price. Also where to get parts.I have an 02 VW Jetta and my dealer has quoted me $360 to replace the coolant flange. Is this fair?Possibly they mean the gasket on the water pump ? If you are having a coolant fluid loss then it is likely they have found the leak. You can buy a liquid which you pour into the cooling system which will seal a minor fluid leak. The other thing is that the water pump pulley is damaged ? Unless it is ripping the drive belt or throwing the drive belt off you could live with it. Get a second opinion by another mechanic.
