How do you release the air buffer on the bumper of a 1974 VW super beetle?

Got into a fender-bender and the bumper, which is on some sort of air piston, sunk into the frame and I can't figure out how to pull it back out.How do you release the air buffer on the bumper of a 1974 VW super beetle?I dont believe you can pull it back out, those were designed to take the brunt of the accident. Those are pistons are energy absorbing impact bumper brackets standard on your 74. They collapse if your in a 5mph or above accident. However, they are replaceable.
