How do I disarm an alarm on a 99 VW Golf?

This happened about a week ago, as well, and I was told to unhook the battery, for about 45 minutes. To reset the computer. When hooking back up put the negative back on first, then the positive. I did this today, but let the battery sit for an hour and a half. But the alarm still sounded.
