What does the red line on the speedometer of a 1982 VW Beetle mean?

Is it safe for the engine (let's not say the passengers or the risk of an accident) to drive past the red line on a highway? What does the red line on the speedometer of a 1982 VW Beetle mean?If I had to guess I would say it's just a reminder to use for watching your speed, it's to high to be a shift reminder. Anyways there is no reason to limit your speed to under 55mph, just listen to your motor and let that be your limit(or the posted speed limit).

This link is from a 79 Beetle(closet to your year I could find) which list the max cruising speed as 80mph.
