What are signs that my VW Super Beetle needs clutch ajustment?

Is the shifter being hard to shift part of a loose clutch?What are signs that my VW Super Beetle needs clutch ajustment?It will engage higher than normal. (It already engages high) but I'm talking the clutch won't engage until the pedal is almost all the way up off the floor or Grinding gears if it's really really bad.
