How much is a replacement computer for an 02 VW Passat?

My 2002 Passat GLS V6 will not start and a friend of mine who is a mechanic tells me its a computer problem and only Volkswagen can fix it. What would be the worst case scenario ($$$) for me if it needs to be replaced?How much is a replacement computer for an 02 VW Passat?The computer is not broken it just needs to be reset. This can only be done by a Volkswagen Mechanic who has the equipment and codes. I had the same problem the dealership charged me about $50 to reset it.
