This is the stock exhaust. How loud should a 2001 VW GTI be inside?I have one, it should be a lot louder. How loud should a 2001 VW GTI be inside?Their pretty loud, but it shouldn't be that loud, you probably have a cracked muffler. Check it out good...including the top which is hard to see.

How can I remove the rear axle nuts to remove the drum brakes on a 1973 VW beetle?

I tried using a breaker bar it bent, I dont have air tools and I cant exert any more pressure on the nut physically then i already amHow can I remove the rear axle nuts to remove the drum brakes on a 1973 VW beetle? The Haynes manual states "Removal of the rear brake drums is a considerable task...". Here I have to agree with them. The first time I tried, I bent the pipe that I had over the 1/2" socket strong bar. Walked away from the job and left it for a few days before I tried it again using my 1/2" strong bar and a 4ft piece of galvanised pipe. Had to jam wedges under the back wheels because the handbrake would not hold and the wheel started to spin.

I now use a 36mm 3/4" drive socket with a long piece of steam pipe (which fits nicely over the 3/4" socket strong bar) to provide extra leverage. The problem arises that the nut is tightened to a torque of 217 lb/ft (30mkg) which is quite considerable.

Heating will not work and will only cause damage.

Once you have managed to loosen it and completed what you were doing, it needs to be tightened again to that same torque otherwise it works loose, damaging the splines on the brake drum.

Good luck on what I can only refer to as one of the more 'crappy' motor repair tasks. How can I remove the rear axle nuts to remove the drum brakes on a 1973 VW beetle?Get some good penetrating oil. something like PB Blaster or similar. You could try WD-40 but I wouldnt recommend it. Soak down the bolt's as mush as you can and let sit for a while. After a few hours resoak them. Maybe let them sit overnight at this point if you can and then try taking them off again. You coudl also get a torch and heat everything around the bolt and then do it from there. The heat makes the metal expand which will make the bolts easier to come out.How can I remove the rear axle nuts to remove the drum brakes on a 1973 VW beetle? If the car is still driveable take it to a small tire store not a big chain store. Maybe they will break it lose for you and then retighten, but not all the way. Limp it home gently fix what needs to be fixed and go back to have it tightened properly.

Will any VW key i order be able to be added to my VW Golf 4 Tdi?

I need a spare key for my car and i have found a site that can import me a key and its about 80% cheaper than going directly to the dealer! I just want to know is there a specific flick key i must order or will any key i order be able to be added to the car? I have the software already to add it!Will any VW key i order be able to be added to my VW Golf 4 Tdi?Just take it to the dealer to have them code it.

By the way, lowering your mileage is illegal almost everywhere in the world - it's called fraud. Will any VW key i order be able to be added to my VW Golf 4 Tdi?Your software's manual should have the answer. And generally, NO you need to order the key made for that make, model and year. Other than that, you should be good. Seems weird that you would have software that costs thousands of dollars to program one key. Also strange that you don't seem to have the manual to go with the software. Hmmmmmmm.......

2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?

It starts sometimes and always when you jump it. Have cleaned posts and autozone says battery health is fine.2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas? It may be the ignition switch. I've replaced a few. The extra voltage/amp's when you jump it overcomes the poor connection in the switch. Try pushing/wiggling switch next time and see if it starts.2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?
might have a bad ground. check the battery cables to make sure everything is clean and tight.

when you turn the key, does the car turn over weak? does it make a series of fast and loud clicks? does it do anything? it might be worth it to buy a new (if you havent already) battery...i would suggest buying an Interstate, they are the best battery for the money hands down.

it may also be a bad solenoid on the starter motor. also, as someone else has said, it may be the ignition switch.

need more information to be able to make a better guess at it.2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?Check the terminal connections are tight. And the earth. Maybe check connections on the starter!!!2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?
i dont know if the bug is anything like the GTI but if your car comes with the stock amplifier in the trunk it could be something with that, my car was having the same problem and i tried everything to fix it (new battery, alternator, etc.), after like 6 months we finally figured out the stock amp was not turning off with the car and was draining the battery, just put your ear up to the speaker and if u hear something coming out when your car is off you found your problem!2001 VW Bug. Battery is holding charge but car does not want to start all the time. Any ideas?Your fault is clearly an electrical power problem! Are you 100% sure battery is ok? If so check for voltage drop on the starter ( could be partially seized), or could be starter cable has high resistance due to burns.

Look for loose contact or rust on the main battery ground wire connection to body, could also cause voltage drop.Clean all main positive and ground contacts, refit and tight to correct torque.

Finally, check the output of the alternator at cold and warm running (should not be less than 13V). Battery may be ok, but lower output alternator could cause low battery charge.I hope this helps.

What does it meen when a temp warning light comes on on my vw golf?

It only does it when it really cold outside, -3 or below, and theres a pic of a snowflake that flashes up at the same time? does it meen i need to check something? all it says in the manual is that its a temp light?........What does it meen when a temp warning light comes on on my vw golf?I believe it's just be an indicator that the temperature outside is cold enough to cause hazardous conditions...i.e. icy roads, so drive carefully. I had the same thing in my Audi (which comes from the same parent VW factory). If the temperature gauge is not climbing to the "H - hot" indicator, then it's probably not the case of being low on antifreeze. What does it meen when a temp warning light comes on on my vw golf?
It means you're hot, sweetie. What does it meen when a temp warning light comes on on my vw golf?it means you car is running hot . check water and make sure you have anti freeze with it.if the water is greenish color you have antifreeze.it also could be your thermostat.when you start your car open up your radiator cap wait 15 minutes and look at the water if it's circulating then your thermostat is working .if not then you need a new thermostat. What does it meen when a temp warning light comes on on my vw golf?
check the sensor in your radiatorWhat does it meen when a temp warning light comes on on my vw golf?If its only happening when its really really cold it shouldn't be over heating. Is it happening while you are driving or just start up or both? Also is it a diesel or gasoline engine? Also where do you live... the Arctic?!

Only think I can think of if its diesel it is to cold for the fuel to burn effiecently but if that is the case it should not be on while driving.

All that being said whenever something wierd comes up like this take it to the shop.

Where to get copy made of vw beetle key made?

i just bought a 2001 vw new beetle and i want a spare key! but i'm not sure where to get it made... i know where there is a vw dealership, but i'm not sure if thats where i would go. i went online and i couldve ordered one, but then where do i get it cut to match my key? please help! i just want a copy!Where to get copy made of vw beetle key made?A really good locksmith can cut your key and "clone it," so that it doesn't have to be programmed to the ignition/computer of the car. The machine isn't cheap; they run from $1500 or so all the way up $10,000, depending upon what the machine can do (some of the machines can also cut a "lazer key") so only the better locksmiths have it. Your car is equipped with anti-theft ignition system, in some places called a "electronic dead bolt," and key is "chipped" and normally needs to be programmed to the vehicle in order to start it. Since you have an existing key that works, you can either take it to the dealership or VW independent specialist, have them cut the key and programme both keys to the vehicle so that will both start the car. The good thing about the "chipped key" is that if you loose it, the other key(s) can be programmed to the car again and the lost key (if found) won't be able to start the car. The lost key will still be able to open the door and possibly the boot and/or the glove box (depending upon the cut) but won't start it.

Normally, I suggest you have three keys (that's what the car came with); 2 switch blade keys that have the keyless remote system on them and a valet key that will only open the door and start the car, won't open the glove box and/or release the fuel door switch (on the door) to operate. The dealership or a good locksmith can make you a valet key so that you can give that to people who park your car. If you programme one or up to six keys, usually the labour charge is the same (at least at the dealerships I've worked at), so it makes sense to make as many keys as you might actually want and save programming costs. Most places charge between .5 to 1.5 hours of labour at the posted hourly labour rate to programme the keys...

Hope this helps, a carWhere to get copy made of vw beetle key made?

  • What do you think about a VW Golf or VW Jetta?

I live in San Francisco and have a HUGE cargo van. I want a small car, and I know German cars are great. Anyone out there ever had a VW Golf or Jetta?

    I want a used one.

Give me the good the bad and the ugly here...What do you think about a VW Golf or VW Jetta?I have owned many Volkswagens and i have to tell you for an older car being used they are one of the best if not the best.

I have owned 3 Volkswagens so far, i had a 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTi, a 1998 GTi VR6, and my current car a 2006 GTi.

All of these cars were pre-owned before i took ownership, i have had the general parts that go bad on any car (for example: CV shafts and injectors my issues with the injectors was at 230,000 miles on my '83)

For what model you should get well there is something you should know first.

the Golf and the Jetta are produced in a almost identical process (Jetta frame is extended to make it a sedan) so picking your golf/Jetta should be on looks since the use the same motor, interior, doors, electronics, and just about everything.

Good hunting for one just try to stay 1999 and newer so it will keep u out of the extremely high miles area. What do you think about a VW Golf or VW Jetta? No matter what model you choose, get one with the TDI diesel engine. With proper preventative maintenance, they are good for 500k and get great fuel mileage. What do you think about a VW Golf or VW Jetta?Yup go for the TDI, Resale value is better, fuel economy is far better, The performance is as good as the base gas engine and with good maintenance it will last for ever. They are known for electrical gremlins, but cars that are going to have them usually have them early on in life and are taken care of by the warranty. There is also great support for the vehicles on forums online. If you want something that is a little quicker, a 1.8T or a 2.0T is excellent. You get lots of power and still get over 30mpg on the highway. The Diesels will get over 40 on the highway. My Dad's TDI gets 49 highway and 38 city. My 2.0T gets 32mpg highway and 25 mpg city. Excellent cars, you won't be disappointed.

How much is my First Act VW Garagemaster guitar worth?

I have a First Act Volkswagen Garagemaster electric guitar that I won for free. However, it's a right-handed guitar, and I'm a lefty. I want to sell it on eBay, so how much should I sell it for?...Need to get a LH guitar. How much is my First Act VW Garagemaster guitar worth? While you have a promotional guitar that is probably a quite decent axe, First Act has a deservedly bad reputation because of the guitars they were building for Walmart. In case you are still drinking the Koolaid, Walmart gets companies to make things for them at the price Walmart wants to pay for them. Therefore, the quality suffers. Just compare a pair of Levis from Walmart with a pair bought from J.C. Penny to see what I mean. First Act's biggest mistake was putting their name on the headstock, instead of one created for the Walmart models.

That said, not many people would be willing to pay more than $50 for it, if you can get that. I have two First Act flat tops that I can't even sell for that, despite they are Like new and have been adjusted to play well.

Since you have a First Act custom shop guitar, my advice to you would be to keep it and learn to play it. I would also recommend that you try to learn to play right handed. Even though it may feel strange at first, you will be glad you did, if you succeed. The reasons are:

    1) Your left hand is more dexterous and is better suited to being on the neck of the guitar. If you can get past it feeling weird at first, you will be a better player in the long run.

    2) Most guitars are set up for right hand. If you play right handed you can play most guitars. This will allow you to participate in impromptu jam sessions, where you might not have your guitar with you, but a spare is available for you to borrow.

    3) If you get good enough to be in a band and your guitar is lost, stolen or broken at the last minute, you will more easily be able to buy or borrow a substitute to make your gig.

    4) If you plan on using tab, almost all are written for right hand and can be confusing for a left hand player.

If you can't get past the weird feeling, there is no shame in having a right handed guitar set up for left hand. Tony Iommi recorded all the classic Black Sabbath (original line up) with a right handed Gibson SG, set up lefty. Also, Jimi Hendrix made most of his recordings with a right handed Fender Stratocaster, set up lefty. These guys are both innovators and legends and this is just two examples of many.

Keep what you have and learn to play. It's a decent guitar, but it won't fetch you enough to buy a used left hand model. I can't stress enough to try right handed first. If you succeed, it will be well worth it.

xxHow much is my First Act VW Garagemaster guitar worth?
Unfortunately First Act's just ain't worth a lot. yours isn't a run of the mill Target or Walmart special but it's not a Gibson either, most people dont know that First Act actually has a custom shop and does make some very nice guitars, yours is a promotional issue and has some very nice features, but it's still a First Act, my guess is anywhere between $150 and $200, personally I'd hang on to it, and if you do decide to hang on to it and not play it, remove the battery for the active pick up so it doesn't corrode and ruin the guitarHow much is my First Act VW Garagemaster guitar worth?I will give you the same advice that I give all of my left handed students, learn to play right handed. Here is why:

#1 you will be putting your more coordinated hand on the neck! (left hand) This gives you a big advantage over right handers! While right handed people are struggling to train their left hand to finger the neck you will be able to quickly start playing and will progress much faster!

#2 virtually all written material for guitar is written from the right hand perspective.

#3 most guitars are built as right handed (as you already know)

There are a lot of lefties who learned right handed and are glad they did. It may feel a bit weird at first but you will quickly get used to it.How much is my First Act VW Garagemaster guitar worth?
Not a great deal, as first Act guitar have a (deservedly) bad reputation.

If you don't yet play you might want to consider learning to play right handed. Many lefties do just that and it's a smart thing to do. Both hands have an important job to do and if anything, fretting is the more challenging task. You would be doing that with your dominant hand, which is a distinct advantage. How much is my First Act VW Garagemaster guitar worth?About $10.

Sell it to some unsuspecting local, but expect very little for it. First Act is a knock-off brand that usually sells at Walmart %26amp; other like shops. How much is my First Act VW Garagemaster guitar worth?

Is it possible to lower the front of a pre-1981 VW Beetle the same way you can lower the rear?

I have a '77 standard Beetle, and wanted to avoid buying anything to lower the front. I know that it is possible to lower the rear by pulling the spring plates off the torsion bars and rotating them one or two splines, and it seems that one should be able to do the same with the front torsion bars. It has?Sounds like your valve lifters are leaking down. Then when you go to start it, there is lots of clearence between your lifters and your valve train, hence why it spins over so fast, until it builds oil pressure and fills up the lifters and then it works properly, builds compression, etc.

You may need to replace the hydraulic Lifters.

Is it easy to replace piston rings in a 2000 VW Jetta?

Depends. Do you know how to tear apart an engine? If you have to ask this question, you are better off taking it to a mechanic. Is it easy to replace piston rings in a 2000 VW Jetta?Only if you are a well-trained mechanic that has experience working on VW engines. I know a lot of mechanics that won't touch any German car because (a) the parts cost a fortune and are hard to get, and (b) German engineering can be very squirrely and you may need specialized tools to get any job done. So unless you really know your stuff, I wouldn't advise trying to do that yourself. Replacing piston rings is MAJOR engine work that requires you to practically tear the whole engine apart. Getting it apart isn't the problem -- putting it back together and having it work properly is.Is it easy to replace piston rings in a 2000 VW Jetta? If your asking no.

First you need to remove the engine from the vehicle and disassemble the engine to install the rings.

Next, why do all that work then just replace rings. At that point rebuild the entire engine. Is it easy to replace piston rings in a 2000 VW Jetta?Yes, this is an arm and a leg job. You can call a shop and get an estimate on the phone but if they don't diagnose the problem they may not guarantee the fix. Make sure you know what's wrong if you tell a shop to make repairs they don't check. Is it easy to replace piston rings in a 2000 VW Jetta?
It will cost you an arm and a leg, and possibly your first born child if there is clyinder scoring or something wrong with your pistons.

Buying a new short block would most likely be a cheaper solution(if there is a problem with the cylinders or pistons).

Then you can keep your leg, and your first born, but you'll still probably lose your arm.

These guys have good prices on VW short bocks they are all new, so you don't have to worry about whether or not they were rebuilt properly, which is a risk that you will run when you get your piston rings replaced.

1992 VW golf died and then wouldnt start again?

1992 VW Golf 1.8L engine. Was sputtering while cold, but when it heated up it was just fine. One day at a traffic light it just died, and I couldn't get it started again. I tried the spark plugs, and wires, and also a fuel filter. My father suggested it may be the distributor. I can't figure out what the problem is1992 VW golf died and then wouldnt start again?I would say to check the battery first. Check for voltage across both terminals. If it is low, try a jumpstart. If the battery doesn't hold a charge then you need a new one.

Is the motor trying to crank over? Assuming the battery is good, the next place to look is the starter (if the motor isn't cranking at all)

If the battery and the starter are working and the engine is trying to turn over, you'll need to check that there is fuel to the engine. pull the plug wires, and have someone try to crank the car over. then pull the plugs one by one and smell for gas. If there is gas present...move on...

If there is fuel, now you need to check for spark. put the plugs and wires back in except for the #1 plug and wire. put the plug back into the wire and hold the electrode close to the valve cover while someone tries to crank the motor. if a spark occurs then you'll have to look elsewhere.

VW's are especially picky with their grounds, so you might want to check those as well. Other than the basics, you might need more help. Some other problems can include a fried ECU or bad wiring.1992 VW golf died and then wouldnt start again? It could be alot of different things, if you're getting spark then it's something fuel related, if you don't get spark then it's electrical1992 VW golf died and then wouldnt start again?I'm seconding Lou's answer! That is all well and good. Me being the curious one just doesnt take someones word on it at the first instant.

If it were ME, I would replace oil and antifreeze and start again. Not drive for rediculous distances but access the situation myself. Pressure test, find the problem.

Find out if you have an oil cooler on your motor. Most VW's do. I have had to replace a few for the symptoms you describe.Since the oil is under a higher pressure than the coolant, oil can force it's way into the radiator. Coolant leaks are common from the water outlet on the back of the head. As stated already, find someone who knows VW.

They can ship the tires to your mechanic to make it easy! Only keep them on during snow season though, usually Nov through early April. What are the best tires for my 2002 VW Passat?
Go to a reputable tire dealer and ask him to see a performance listing on the tires he stocks. This lists the handling characteristics of the tires, based on factory testing. Pick the top five or so that are significantly outstandingly rated, then price them in your size. Base you final decision on the price of the best of the best or the best as your income dictates. Try to pick about a 60k to 65k mile tire, they aren't as hard as the 80k's but are more cost effective than the 40-50k tires. If you find the better rating in an 80k, go for it. When you negotiate the deal, always try to factor in lifetime spin balance as well as rotation. You may have to push, to get them to do so. Its a money maker, when they give free rotation only. This will extend the comfort and life of your tires. What are the best tires for my 2002 VW Passat?First find out what size you have. The size will determine what company makes that size and then just shop for an all season tire. If you are really worried about winter, buy snow tires. Doesn't really matter though. I live in SD, and your winters are NOTHING compared to ours, and we're used to snow. Several of us just slap on whatever we can find. Can I put a factory turbo from a VW Jetta on a Z4 bmw?

not a fact but i don't see why notCan I put a factory turbo from a VW Jetta on a Z4 bmw?You can do anything with enough money...but

I wouldn't recommend that turbo on a Z4. If it's a stock turbo, then it is way too small for your engine to make any kind of worth while improvement.

It will choke the engine at high rpms. Can I put a factory turbo from a VW Jetta on a Z4 bmw?You could, but a Jetta turbo is only capable of making a max of 190-200hp at the crank. I'm sure the stock Z4 engine makes more than that, so you would need a different turbo anyways. The Jetta turbo is meant to be used on a 180hp 1.8L, so you would probably need 2 of them for a Z4.

1/ Would probably stay away from Dual Carbs, lots of problems, and parts hard to get.

2/ Check that the fuel filler rubber is still there, that many have broken off and went into the fuel tank, causing fuel blockage. That the fuel tank has to be pulled out, and have the rubber debis removed.

3/ Male sure the Brakes are safe, that the master cylinder, and brake parts are very expensive to replace.

4/ Check the front susp, that these parts are very costly also.

5/ Look for Rust and Body Damage.

6/ Check the engine number that it goes with the year and model.

7/ Check the shifting and look for leaks at the trans, and rubber mounts.

8/ Check all the electrical that it works, looking for modified wiring, or missing wiring.

9/ Place the bus on a Rack and look under it, looking for leaks and damage.

    Baywindow Bus Buying Guide

    by Richard Atwell

    (c) Copyright 2004

I think a perfect 68-79 bus is worth $6,000-7,000 in today's market. That's a lot less than the last Vanagon issued (especially if it's a Synchro Westfalia) and a lot less than a fully restored split window ($40,000!!!) but those are the breaks when you are the awkward middle child.

Every year there are fewer busses on the road and as cars reach collector age the prices tend to rise. But who is complaining! Volkwagens were an affordable, dependable "people's car" and purely based on the prices of the other generations, the 2nd generation bay window bus is still a true embodiment of that philisophy. Now is a great time to restore or recondition a baywindow and enjoy it: quality German parts are still available and affordable.

Used prices can be are higher if the buyer is on the East Coast where everything is rusted or simply unavailable. Higher again if the bus is a Westfalia with all the accessories. Ideal condition is hard to define because so much feeling is involved in a purchase but lets say this is a bus that has been well cared for, driven regularly perhaps infrequently and has had a some of the original equipment replaced that relates to wear. A history of receipts is very useful to look at so be sure to ask the seller about them.

Some busses go for $250 while some are advertized on eBay for $16K. The latter is of course ridiculous because you could restore that same $250 bus for much less than $16K unless you get ripped off or go crazy with bodywork ressurecting the dead. Any bus in absolutely original condition means that over time rubber items have perished, plastics become brittle or cracked, greases have gone hard etc. You can't expect to buy a bus like this and drive it like a similarly well cared for bus that didn't cost as much but was well maintained. Your intentions wrt this time machine should be purchasing a museum piece unless of course the model is rare. For example, a 12K mile garaged double cab with original paint that was never sold in the US.

Any smart buyer with an infinite amount of patience will price the necessary repairs against the prospective bus, drop the price accordingly, make an offer or just keep looking. Of course sellers have their minimum price in mind and may just wait for the next prospective buyer. For most of us that are eager about bus ownership, it requires a little give and take because looking for a good bus is no where near as fun as driving one. At least in your head, consider the cost of the replacement parts to give you an idea of what you are really paying for. These vehicles are 30 years old and you want to be safe on the road while driving one for your sake and for others.

If I was the prospective bus savvy buyer I would make a list and grill you on the following categories below checking each item as I consider the implications of buying your bus. Anyone buying a bus solely based on color is only human but if you stay objective it will pay off in the long run unless you really enjoy restoration work and have time, the space and the money to perform it.

These gems are all largely the same wrt features despite the original purchase price (1968 camper was $2,765, 1979 camper was $7,295). Some prefer the earlier busses with the familar but underpowred 1600cc engine, others the later models with the Type 4 engine, fuel injection and more modern camper interiors.

In general, the 1971 and 1978 models are the most desirable but I'd take a favorable bus from another year because parts can be swapped and upgraded. Chances are the engine and transmission have been rebuilt and/or isn't original. You really have to know your busses to figure out what's not original sometimes. If you have to smog test your bus then you might want to consider a model year that is exempt from testing. Likewise you may want to avoid a model that has been converted to carbs and unable to pass a visual inspection test.

All of the prices below assume that you will be doing the repair work yourself and buying NEW parts. While used parts are available, buying some news parts is unavoidable. Engine and transmission work is expensive and I've estimated the labor cost of each in the price. If you are comfortable with engine and transmission replacement then you are fortunate and have more options available to you. For other items the price range reflects the severity of the problem. I can't list every possible part that can go wrong so they are only estimates that cover common categories. For strictly labor items I've indicated this also.

Also review my engine inspection article before you make your purchase so you don't end up buying a dud.

I've provided some annotations to the list below:

    * [labor intensive] means it's not a simple replacement even if you have the proper tools but you can do it.

Now that the harness is wired you should be able to Connect your radio into where you initially disconnected they factory radio. slide your metal radio sleeve (supplied with radio) in and secure it the the new housing. Your new radio will slide in and you should hear a click. It's is now locked in. Turn your ignition over to make sure the radio powers up and works properly.( which if you followed the manual and my directions it should) then put your trim back on and your ready to rock!!! I have installed 2 different radios in my 98 golf and vws are tight. There isn't much room behind the radio so make sure all your wiring is no longer than necessary. I have also done a 96 cavalier, 99 Taurus, 05 celica (as well as subs and amp) 03 camaro (as well as subs and amp), 98 probe (as well as subs and amp) and a 95 civic. Installing radios is not difficult. I would say total difficult is about 6 out of 10. With about 1-2 hour instalation time for a novice. When you get better you will be able to put them in in about 15-30 minutes. I would recomend you buy auto wire strippers. They will speed up the job drastically. Have fun!

You will have to go to a VW dealership to get it made. When I had to get a spare of my vw beetle key, I first went to my local hardware store to get a copy. The unfortunate part is that the dealership charged me about $250.Where to get copy made of vw beetle key made?Go to the WW dealer.

I have a VW beetle 99, manual. its over heating, the engine when i turn it on it runs fine, it doesnt jump around which is good because if it did then that would be a sign of head gasket problems, but there is oil in my coolant reservoir. How are VW's in terms of reliability?

The new jetta's and GTI lok nice but I am concerned about VW's reliability (Consumer Reports)? Would it be good for first cars. I have also heard complaints about VW reliability for owners. How are VW's in terms of reliability? In a word, uncertain. VW has slipped in the European JD Powers initial quality ratings to 34 out of 37 manufacturers (this is going on memory; I'm not taking the time to dig that one out.)

Basically, VW is having a LOT of problems with electrical components and more complex sub-assemblies. Their cars are very well designed, and are EXTREMELY sturdy, but they come in two flavors - tank and lemon. I've had friends and clients who have had the same car, same model year and one is thrilled, the other is ready to take a flame thrower to the dealership.

If you're interested in a VW, remember "less is more." Avoid the New Beetle. Stick with the base four cylinder models, and avoid complex electrical components.

First is a 2002 Jetta GLI VR6 24V 6 speed. The second is a 2003 Jetta 1.8T 5 speed. Love them both. How are VW's in terms of reliability?
    great. highly recommend
As noted on previous questions about VWs, I have had 3 Golfs:

    1987, 1995, and 2000.

The first one had 180,000+ miles on it after 8 years on the original clutch. My husband drove it for a while, and I'm not sure what he did with it after we separated.

The second on went 175,000+ miles in six years on the original clutch when I bought the third one. My boyfriend then drove it; we replaced the clutch at around 190k, and it had almost 250,000 miles when it died.

Now the third one just turned 158k this week after 5 1/2 years with the original clutch. I have to say that this one has needed less maintenance, most likely due to engineering improvements, like better hoses, etc.

I worked at a couple VW dealers in the late '80s and found that most owners loved the cars, even the ones that did have repair issues. It seemed that the manual transmissions have better reliability - plus they are the most fun to drive and are better on gas (all 3 of mine got 28-30 M.P.G. on average). The weakest point has been electrical issues. My first had manual everything, so no problems; the second had power locks which eventually gave out; the current one has power windows and locks, I had to do a window repair (for which I was reimbursed by VW through a recall) and the locking system now has issues.

I'm saving up for a new car and am facing a tough decision; because I am so at home in those cars after 500,000+ miles behind the wheel. I still love driving them and know that I can really drive when I have an open road that twists and turns or a straight-away on the highway. I also love that I know they'll get me through all conditions I experience here in NJ: cold, icy winters; rainy, wet springs; hot, humid summers; plus trips around the region into NY City and Philadelphia, up into the Pocono mountains and down to the shore.

However, my son is 15 and he and his friends are basketball players and don't fit so comfortably in my back seat. So the new Rabbit (which is SO cute!) is not really an option. The Touareg, which I have always wanted is too expensive to buy and fill-up. The new Eos convertible is HOT, but again there's not a lot of rear passenger room. So I'm looking at the crossover SUVs that other manufacturer's have... If only there were a VW in-between the Rabbit and Touareg - the ultimate crossover (sigh). How are VW's in terms of reliability?
Volkswagen is consistently ranked at the bottom of lists for reliability. In a word, they suck.
I loved my 2000 Passat V6, but at about 65K it needed a major computer component that was almost $1000. The alloy wheels pitted badly in the Northeast - something that shouldn't happen on wheels of that price. It also got lousy gas mileage on premium fuel.

VW has not fared well on JD Power for many years now.
I've got 64,000 kms on my 2003 Golf and it runs great. It's only been in the shop for regular maintenance.

Amazing. I know of VW's that have lasted 700,000+ miles.
i havea 99 with over 180000 miles and i still smoke other cars without a problem, my car runs great and even though mines older then wat ur thinkin bout gettin their engines r known 2 b bullet proof so i say gohead and get it, beat on it all u want u wont break it

Is it possible to open the soft top on a 99 VW Cabrio GLS without putting the parking brake on?

I have a 99 VW Cabrio GLS that i got from my mom, now she has a Saab 95 convertible. On the VDub you have to put the parking brake on if you want to get the top down. Is there any tweak for the wiring to make it working without the parking brake on? For example, on the saab you can open it even in motion, you just have to go under 20mph.Is it possible to open the soft top on a 99 VW Cabrio GLS without putting the parking brake on?Usually the reason you have to apply a brake or put the car in park before you lower the top is for safety 1 and 2 to keep you from destroying the operational parts of the top while trying to lower it in motion. If it is at all possible to lower the roof in motion it should be in the instruction Manuel or check with you local VW dealer to see if there's any way to do so. I would venture to say not though. Side point your moms SAAB roof was more than likely designed to go down in motion under 20 mph and it proberly was right in the Manuel for the car, you may have just missed it.

I have a old 1969 vw bus with no engine, whats the cheapest engine i can put in it to get it up and working?

I dont know anything about cars, but my girlfriend really wants to get this bus up and working again... Someone stole the original engine and i cant find a vw bus engine to replace it, will any engine work? I really want something lower priced that wont explode on meI have a old 1969 vw bus with no engine, whats the cheapest engine i can put in it to get it up and working?Try to get a used one from salvage yard,- or on Craigs list, -- then install and cross our fingers! Will probably be more expensive for a "new engine" than the bus is worth, good rebuilt is going to run you around $1000 or more for engine, and then you still have to install it!

Installing engine is not hardest job in world --- I used to remove or install one in 1/2 hour (right tools equipment and experience helps a lot!) You can probably do it first time in about 4.... You will need concrete floor, "floor jack" (also referred to as a trolley jack),-- Jack stands, and a good creeper, --- as well as proper tools!

As for what fits car,---- same as van, even Karmann Ghia uses the same engine! Also same engine used for about 6-8 years, so there were lots and lots of them out there! You just have to have the same fan,-"fan box, and generator as original for the van! -- If you plan on having heat, you need the same junction boxes on exhaust pipes, -- (or maybe you have gas heater in this one?) And of course you are going to have to hunt up all the parts they damaged getting it out of van! If this was a "thief in the night" type "stolen",-- then a lot of stuff was probably damaged, as thieves don't care how much mess they make, as long as they get the engine and get away! *** Only different engine in that era, was if you have a "notchback", -- and not a whole lot of those were imported! , and even then I think it was same block, but a whole lot more things to change to convert to fit the van!

My memory a little foggy, as that was in the 70s when I worked in the foreign car garage! In those days we rebuilt engine and installed it for $400I have a old 1969 vw bus with no engine, whats the cheapest engine i can put in it to get it up and working?
Yes, you can bolt in any VW engine, but you'd be wise to get one that has the oil cooler set up away from the cylinders. In the older engines (probably through '70) the oil cooler was in the way of cooling air to the #3 cylinder, leading to exhaust valve failure. The valve head would break off and put a hole in the top of the piston. Not a problem if you have the heads rebuilt at 100,000 miles. As far as I know, the engines are all interchangeable.

'68 was 1500cc, then it went to 1600. Single port went to dual port at some point, and horsepower climbed a bit more. The super beetles had a slightly more powerful engine. But in a bus, you're not likely to notice a few horspower more or less.

As far as exploding on you, if you buy a '68 or later engine and it hasn't been abused too much, and if you take care of the exhaust valve problem that I mentioned, and if you change the oil regularly (3,000 mi.) and don't let the oil go dry, there's not much to go wrong. They're heavily overbuilt.I have a old 1969 vw bus with no engine, whats the cheapest engine i can put in it to get it up and working?Apparently these are still manufactured in Brazil, and I think they were manufactured after 1974 in Mexico.

You may have better luck trying to find a Mexico or Brazil sourced motor for one than to find one from the USA, where the air cooled motor was last in 1974 due to higher emissions.

Brasil is still making VW Kombi van like your 1969...

  • I purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive?

My Jetta came with three keys: 2 keyless entry flip keys and 1 valet key. In my area it costs $225 to replace one keyless entry flip key and $75 for the valet key. Replacing the locks and keys would cost over $1000 easily. All keys must be made by VW (though there is currently a class action lawsuit against VW for their monopoly on replacement keys).I purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive?don't know what you mean "replace locks" but you have 1 of 2 options...

1: go to a vw dealership and ask to have a spare key made. you will have to show some sort of id...it will prob. be around $50 or up. now a days, they don't need the key, or atleast that's what i've known. they have the key configuration stored in their computer system and have it cut from there. i don't have a newer car or laser cut key or anything and they are able to do that.

2: wait till you lose it and then get a new one (see above about why they don't need you key). i would make sure that this applies to vw, but i can't imagine saturn is ahead of them.

whatever you decide, you're going to need to contact your dealership and ask. perhaps a spare was included (as it usually is with new cars) and they simply neglected to give it to you.I purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive?
If its an original key and lock on the vehicle, then you can go to the dealership and order a spare key using your VIN number.

I purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive?go to the VW dealership. it's a pain in the butt. i had to get this done for my 2004 passat. bring them your ID, title, registration, VIN. it takes a few days for it to come in. Valet key was $125. normal $175. i had this done last month in syracuse, NYI purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive?
    Ouch!!!!

There is a reason that they dealer doesn't want to include the extra keys... the 'switch blade' key is about $250 in my area, and the valet key is about $150. But you have to have proof of ownership and they can cut it for you, i believe that the lock replacement is going to be cost prohibitive .I purchased a VW today and it didn't come with a spare key, How do I replace locks and keys? Is it expensive?keys are not that expensive on ebay. I bought one and then realize that it does not work for my car. I have the 99 jetta and I selling my key on craigslist for 50.00. what year is your car?

What year did VW buses have auto-transmissions available?

Im looking for the year specifically I know its in the late 70's but I cant figure out which year, also, if you know of any place in the continental US that sells these bad boys let me know thanx!!What year did VW buses have auto-transmissions available? The first year was 1974, for Continental (USA bound) buses.

The best place to look for an automatic bus is the Samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/

Keep in mind a lot of the ads will say that the automatic transmission was RARE, but thats just not the case. Production figures for manuals and automatics are about 50/50. The manual transmission LASTED longer in the bus, so thats why you dont see many of the automatics left. I highly reccomend getting a manual transmission, even if it means that you have to learn to drive a stick. Better performance, better gas mileage, and less costly to repair. What year did VW buses have auto-transmissions available?I'm pretty sure that once the Type 4 engine was introduced into the Bay Window Bus(circa 1972), a few years later the automatic tranny started showing up. I believe the Vanagon models had the option of an Automatic thought their run from 1980 to 1991. The Eurovans also had automatics, but all three generations of buses did not perform well with the auto tranny. Unless you are missing your left foot or leg, I'd stay with the manual tranny. It gets better gas mileage too.

I am looking in to buying a 2001 VW Passat has any one had any problems with this kind of car ?

I am a women looking for a good second hand car I was looking into Honda and Volkswagen are this cars good cars for a women? I don't want to spend to much time at the auto shop. I need help !I am looking in to buying a 2001 VW Passat has any one had any problems with this kind of car ?As a rule, VW's the past few years have not been very reliable. They have recently started to get better though. The 2001 Passat had problems with engine coils (if it is the 1.8 turbo 4) and other electrical gremlins. VW service is also rated dead last, and parts and hourly rates are higher than the norm. In short, it will probably break down and cost a lot of time and money to fix. A lot of shops cannot work on them as they require special tools and diagnostics. It is a shame as they are very nice cars.

I would do a Honda myself. I would be a little wary of the automatic transmission on the V6 models though, there have been known problems. A 4 cylinder version is probably a better bet for longevity (and mpg).

A Camry would also be a good bet, but they are not all that fun to drive. At least the Accord will take a turn and put a grin on your face occasionally.

How much should I expect to pay for a head gasket replacement on a 2000 VW Beetle?

there's water in the oil, haven't gotten it looked at yet but guy at autozone said it might need a new gasket... caramel colored gunk on oil cap insideHow much should I expect to pay for a head gasket replacement on a 2000 VW Beetle?Did you over heat the heck out of the car?

If you wanted to go the cheap route, all they do is remove the head and resurface it. Then slap it back on.

If the car overheated, then you also need to fix that too. Which is most likely the waterpump.

In the ball park of $1500 if done right, using factory parts. How much should I expect to pay for a head gasket replacement on a 2000 VW Beetle?Does it use coolant?

If it does then it probably is a head gasket. IF done properly should cost around $1500-$1600.

If it does not use coolant then you have another problem. If you live in a cold weather area and take mostly short trips (7 miles or less) then the oil never gets hot enough to evaporate the condensation leading to the "gunk" in the oil.

And you should be using nothing but full synthetic oil ! VW's really don't like conventional oil.

Either way take it to a VW specialist not some general shop that has a cheeper price.

On a 1971 VW Super Beattle, How do you remove the headlight wiring when removing the fender? You need a thin shim to unplug the wires from the connector. The wires push in from the back of the connector. If tou look in from the front of the connector you will see there is a small catch that holds the terminal in the connector. File down a small screwdriver like you might use to tighten the screws on a pair of glasses. File it down flat and push it in there and it should let go by pulling the wire from the back. When you go to plug the wires back in you may need to bend the little tang back out a bit so it will catch and lock. Be sure to make a sketch of what color wire goes in where so you can get them back in the same place.
