Why did the engine management light come on on my vw golf?

I was very low in petrol, the warning light was on so as i started up to go and get some fuel i noticed my engine management light was on.

I had to drive 40 miles with it on last night, it didnt do any harm, anyway this morning while driving it, it went out after about 15mins into the journey.

Whats that all about?

Someone said it may have something to do with the quality of the fuel or even letting the fuel tank get so low.

Only time to worry is when it does not go off. There are far too many systems on cars these days monitoring everything. Fuel flow, temperature of everything, pressures etc etc and all these things conspire to put lights on and frighten you. If it turns into a regular occurrence then take it to a garage. Even though the light went out the code is still stored in memory and a reader will tell you what caused it.
