How do i fix the stick shift in VW passat?

there is a spring on the shaft of the shifter. it used to be compressed but i accidentally removed the panel and it sprung. ive tried to make it go back down but it wont stay, any help?How do i fix the stick shift in VW passat?go to a repair shop.
